As the crowning achievement of their first year as a varsity sport (following two years as a club sport), the MHS Girls' Lightweight 4+ Crew Team took first place in a close race at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, held annually on Philadelphia's Schuykill River. Stotesbury is the oldest and largest high school rowing race in the country; over 180 schools from Canada to the north and Virginia in the south compete there. Of seven Montclair boats, four qualified for the semi-finals, two made it to the finals and two received medals (the girls' senior double team also captured a silver). This is especially impressive considering that two years ago the fledgling team sent only one boat of four girls to the competition.
Crew was introduced as a sport at Montclair High to allow more kids to get involved in high school sports, since it requires little previous training. This year's team had 35 members.
